Yesterday went well. Today went well. I haven't made it to the gym yet, but hope to start tomorrow. Finding the time and working out child-care for the little one will make it a bit harder, but I can do it. I can always go in the evening after she's in bed, if I have to. The past few nights have been ROUGH though. On New Year's Eve/Day, she woke up at 1:45 a.m. And stayed up until 5 a.m. More than 3 hours. Finally went back to sleep - and was up for the day at 7. Last night was 12-12:30, then up for the day at 5. We've been dragging over here.

I've spent YEARS trying to lose weight, thinking about losing weight, reading about losing weight. I've never followed any particular "diet" plan, except for Weight Watchers. I've always felt that, while there may be valid science behing Atkins or South Beach (but probably not Cabbage Soup) - I prefer to just eat less and move more. I did give Weight Watchers a try, and followed their Core program. I found it very helpful in changing how I looked at food. Before WW, if I had 100 calories to eat, I could eat an apple or 2 Oreos. Guess which I chose? With the Core program - an apple would be "free," while Oreos would cost points. I realized that food wasn't all just calories - some calories were better than others. Unfortunately, I still didn't follow it...

I'm looking to learn more about food and nutrition. I checked several books out of the library, I'll write about them as I read them. But for now - it's SVU time.

You won't believe this - I'm making a New Year's Resolution to lose weight! How innovative! The good news is, despite craptastic habits, I weigh the same as I did a year ago. The bad news is: I weigh the same as I did a year ago, which isn't a good number. I'm about 5 pounds over my pre-pregnancy weight, and my pre-pregnancy weight was the highest I'd ever been. eep!

Aside from losing weight, I really <strike>want</strike> need to create better habits to show my daughter.

I struggle with ingrained habits, and I want to do what I can to avoid her having the same issues. I'm sure she'll have plenty of other reasons to hate me when she's older.

I may or may not record what I eat every day, and what I do for exercise. I'm more interested in writing about my thoughts on food and stuff. I hope I can keep it up for one full year - we shall see.

So the goals, as of now:
Goal 1: Drink more water
To further that goal, I'm filling up 3 water bottles at night and putting them in the fridge. Then I can just grab-and-go. I have a Diet Coke every.single.morning, and I'm not about to give that up. But then I have to have one bottle of water before I can have another one. (Limiting DC is not on the agenda this year.)

Goal 2: Exercise more days than not
To further this goal, I'm keeping a calendar and will record each day I workout. Maybe I'll do it here, too. So far, not so good - 0/2.

Goal 3: Limit fast food
To further this goal, I plan to allow myself to eat it once each calendar month. No monkeying around with "it's been 4 weeks" - straight up once in January, once in February, etc. This includes anything with a drive-thru, but not Subway, Quiznos, Panera.

Those are the 3 stated goals. I prefer to make goals based on behaviors, rather than outcomes. The outcome I'm hoping for is to lose 45 pounds, hopefully at about 5 pounds per month. For right now, I'm not counting calories. I've done that in the past, and while I think it's a good tool, it is extremely time-consuming. For now I'm going to focus on better habits, and see what happens.

1-1-11
Breakfast: cheerios
Lunch: Amy's Creamy Tomato Bisque, goldfish crackers, string cheese
Dinner: Blueberry pancakes (made with whole wheat flour, fat-free cottage cheese, etc.)
Snack: 2 squares dark chocolate

It's taken me a little longer, I missed two weeks due to scheduling difficulties and insanely hot weather, but aside from those two (concurrent) weeks, I've kept at it. I tend to run Sun-Mon-Tues, and try to get in another workout of some sort on one or two other days.

At any rate, I'm slow as molasses on a cold day, but I'm doing it. I think I'm going to sign up for a 5K on September 19. eek! My only goal is to finish.

I wonder if I could work up to a 10K by Thanksgiving?Irish Gooberhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08707368574187087987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7084541440464467472.post-28230595928113912192010-07-16T12:06:00.001-07:002010-07-16T12:06:56.570-07:00Oh hey - diapers!

In case you didn't know - I use cloth diapsers on the Little One. I have certain environmental issues that really get my panties in a twist, and unnecessary waste is one of them! So we use cloth diapers - but DAMN they're expensive. The nice folks at The Cloth Diaper Whisperer have weekly giveaways, which I can enter by mentioning them on a blog. (They didn't specify that the blog had to have readers, now did they?)

What I'm not liking about this plan is you do each workout 3 times, then move on. Just when I'm figuring out my milestones, it changes up on me. Oh well.

Ran on Saturday and Sunday. Did a 3 mile loop in 33-34 minutes. Which is pretty damn fast, for me. That's basically 11 minute miles, and half of that is walking. I'm still trying to figure that one out - my goal is to someday *run* 3 11-minute miles. How am I covering that distance now? I'm thinking I miscalculated something.

Anyhow, finished Week 2, wasn't too bad. Week 3 now, then we're on vacation next week. I'm going to try to do my 3 runs anyhow. Since I'm just following times (not distances) no reason I can't run even in a strange town. (and really, with all of the resources out there, I could easily map out distances.)

Tonight I *may* bike to the gym, lift, then bike home. It'd be about 8.5 miles roundtrip, which is doable. I'm only concerned about it getting dark. I'm by no means an experienced biker.

8.5 workouts done - more than 1/3 of the way to my itouch!Irish Gooberhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08707368574187087987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7084541440464467472.post-76854489819376386492010-06-26T16:25:00.000-07:002010-06-26T16:25:09.235-07:00Excuse me, it's rather dark in hereWhere did we leave off?

I started C25K last week. Got in 2 runs, and 2 full weight workouts. Sunday was Father's Day. We spent the day at my in-law's, gone from 11-6:30. Get home....and the power is out.

I am not deterred. Figuring it'd be back in an hour or whatever, I putz around then get into my jogging clothes. I head outside - shorts, t-shirt, ipod - ready to go. My neighbors pull up and fill us in - power went out about 4, and will be back on Tuesday evening.

Come again?

Tuesday evening. Aw crap. Scrap the run, go over to my dad's to get camping lanterns (which he keeps for just such occasions, not camping), find batteries, etc.

Monday we spent the day at dad's to stay cool and lit. Power came back Monday night, but Monday-Tuesday were wonky days and I didn't get in workouts.

So - in my Quest for an Itouch:
Week 1: 4 workouts
C25K: I missed one workout.

I opted to just start Week 2 of C25K, which is 90/120 intervals, x6. Did that on Wednesday, no problem. Rode my bike on Thursday, which I hadn't done in at least 2 years, possibly more. Nothing Friday. Earlier today I walked to the store - Al says I get credit for 1/2 a workout. woot! Heading out for another run a little later this evening. Back on track.Irish Gooberhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08707368574187087987noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7084541440464467472.post-16442768916310159292010-06-19T16:24:00.000-07:002010-06-19T16:24:44.281-07:00Veggie Veggie Yum YumSeveral years ago, I bought a vegetable steamer. It sat in the cupboard for upwards of 3-4 years before I even took it out of the package. Bought a new one today, and that bad boy didn't get to rest but a few hours before I put him to work.

And a full-body weight workout today. 4 down, 21 to itouch!Irish Gooberhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08707368574187087987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7084541440464467472.post-88885140346722586252010-06-18T11:18:00.000-07:002010-06-18T11:18:26.389-07:00I'm a RockstarTuesday: C25K
Wednesday: full-body weights
Thursday: OWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW. Could barely move. Al made fun of me in the morning as I slowly hobbled down the stairs.

Was supposed to run that night. um....ow. Thought about a bike ride instead. And really - what I really needed to do was mop the kitchen floor. *Somebody* is mobile and MAN that floor is disgusting.

It was a very close race.

Running won.

So off I went. And I did the C25K workout. And it wasn't hard at all. Finished the same loop, besting my time by 1:20. (um 00:01:20).

Friday: OW.

I'm getting old, but at least I didn't give up.Irish Gooberhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08707368574187087987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7084541440464467472.post-30210414862620260142010-06-15T17:36:00.000-07:002010-06-15T17:36:59.880-07:00*ppfffffffffffffffffffttttttttt**blows dust off blog*

*laughs nervously*

um...hi.

Don't ask, I don't know.

Started Couch-to-5K today. I've looked at it in the past, and thought the first few weeks looked easier than I needed - I always figured I'd start at week 3 or so. Decided to take the plunge, and start at the beginning. Don't know how long I'll last - my knees may not allow me to continue.

But I'll try.

And I have the added incentive that Al says I can get an iTouch after I do 25 workouts. (Did he think that would happen this year?)

Really hemmed and hawed about going tonight. During the day it's too hard to get to the gym - I have to pack up Punky's bag, get her to a sitter, etc. etc. etc. But after her bedtime I'm ready to crash. While Al put her down tonight, I relaxed for a few minutes, but forced myself up after half an hour. One step outside and I was glad I did. It was a beautiful cool night - so much better to be outside! The first week calls for intervals of running 60 sec, walk 90 - for 20 minutes. (Or 8 intervals. Er...I hope I did that math right, because that's how many I did.) 5 minute warm up/cool down. It wasn't too hard - although my gait/posture is ridiculous. I think I did about a 2 mile loop, in exactly 30 minutes.

Where the hell did half of June go?Irish Gooberhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08707368574187087987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7084541440464467472.post-77934877452753862612010-04-28T11:21:00.000-07:002010-04-28T11:21:07.427-07:00FrustratedMy weight is staying right around the same few numbers. It hasn't gone up as high as my starting weight, but has been hovering in the same 5-pound range. I'm doing a Biggest Loser competition with some friends, and for my official weigh-in this week, I'm up .5 pounds.

I'm eating about 1200-1300 calories each day, and working out 4 days a week. I feel a *little* trimmer, but the scale is driving me bonkers.Irish Gooberhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08707368574187087987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7084541440464467472.post-54898410724415248192010-04-28T11:14:00.001-07:002010-04-28T11:14:11.488-07:00Confession(I was going to post this a few days ago, I'll try to write it from that perspective.)

I took a few days off. Not intentionally. Life just got busy.

Thursday - no time for the gym
Friday - gym, decent eating
Saturday - EXHAUSTED. I slept during my free time for the gym. Ate fine during the day, but went out for Mexican and it was bloody delicious.
Sunday - baby's baptism, busy busy busy. Ate not so bad...not great, but not bad.
Monday - food fine, no gym because I was still exhausted
Tuesday - back on track

I wasn't pleased with myself for skipping the gym 4/6 days, and while my eating wasn't perfect (mmmm...enchiladas!), it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Instead of saying, "well, I'm having junk for dinner, might as well go hog wild all day" - I kept the other meals in check. This is improvement, people.

Why am I so flippin' tired all the time? It's getting ridiculous.Irish Gooberhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08707368574187087987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7084541440464467472.post-46907245243585890292010-04-23T07:08:00.001-07:002010-04-23T07:08:48.222-07:00No way!I didn't go to the gym yesterday - too busy, plus a day off wasn't a bad thing.

And you know what - I sorta missed it. A little. Crazy.Irish Gooberhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08707368574187087987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7084541440464467472.post-7540441652310724392010-04-21T17:03:00.000-07:002010-04-21T17:03:43.850-07:00Take that, Wendy's!Starting a diet/exercise program last week turned out to be...well, not the best timing. There is a ton going on in my life right now, which is keeping me very busy and pretty stressed. Usually a great combination for bad habits.

I had today all planned out, then things changed and everything was different. Ended up leaving the house around lunchtime. Hadn't eaten lunch, and needed a Diet Coke. (I'm completely, totally, utterly addicted to FOUNTAIN Diet Coke.) So I hit the drive-thru at Wendy's. Here I was - lunch time, hadn't eaten, running around like a chicken with my head cut-off, trying to accomplish a million different things - in the drive-thru.

Those who know me, know where this is headed...
Except - I JUST GOT A DIET COKE.
Would have preferred 1 more cardio and 1 more lower, but things got hectic. This week is going to be really hectic as well - will do my best to fit in 4 cardios, hopefully 5.

I feel pretty confident - got a little off track this weekend, and next weekend is the little one's christening, so there will be another day of food-based socializing to contend with, but I will do my best to not go out of control. This week is going to be extremely hectic - already a lot going on, and now some last-minute emergencies to deal with as well, so who knows what will happen.Irish Gooberhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08707368574187087987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7084541440464467472.post-23793989661307712002010-04-17T16:44:00.000-07:002010-04-17T16:44:25.639-07:00Coming CleanToday was not the best day.

It was the first weekend day. For several years, I've been in the habit of going to Einstein Bros. Bagels and getting a blueberry muffin for breakfast on the weekends. Today Client and I (and little one) headed out to do an errand. Client said, "are we stopping [at Einstein]," and I said no, with hesitation. We ran our errand, then I caved and had him stop.

I was feeling stressed - had some sort of bad news this morning. I felt deflated and just UGH. This is not a reason to have a muffin.

This afternoon we went to a birthday party. I had:
-3 glasses of wine
-a few potato chips
-tortilla chips and spinach dip
-tortilla chips and mexican dip
-broccoli and dip
-salad
-jello
-roll
-lasagna
-cake

And the cake was damn good. I'm full enough that I won't eat dinner, but definitely ate more than I needed to at the party. (following even more, worse news.) Didn't work out - due to time constraints and needing a rest day anyhow. I did walk to/from the party, probably a mile round-trip.

Hoping to gym tomorrow, but have several other things I need to accomplish as well - while I want to make the gym a priority, these other errands really can't wait either. I guess worst-case I'll gym in the evening.Irish Gooberhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08707368574187087987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7084541440464467472.post-58810750307575937302010-04-16T12:54:00.000-07:002010-04-16T12:54:23.411-07:00Keepin' at ItHad a nice workout - 20 minutes cardio then full-body weights. I'm so lucky to have family who will watch the little one for a few hours each week.

Tempted to have junk food tonight - was thinking pizza slices (an improvement over getting a whole pizza....) but we have a birthday party tomorrow - I will get my junk fix then.

Client is going to be losing weight this way too.

May attempt running tomorrow.....ooh boy.Irish Gooberhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08707368574187087987noreply@blogger.com0
